Creating World Peace

In my role as chief executive officer of an internationally renowned educational institution, I am frequently invited to attend a wide range of events.  Many of those events are...

...unpleasantly noisy, often as a consequence of the loudness of the other guests and the choice of music played.

One of the noisiest intrusions into any enlightened discussion is the playing of a national anthem.  Many such anthems appear to have been chosen for military or sporting purposes.  Some have even been selected by tone-deaf politicians who appear to be without any musical taste whatsoever.

In my most recent discussions, at the Mozarty Party's World Peace and Policy Forum, it has come to my attention that national anthems never make a positive contribution to anything except political marketing campaigns.

You may not know the Australian national anthem, even if you are an Australian.  If you do know the tune, I would be very surprised if its words hold much meaning for you.  And no, the words do not include "Walzing Matilda", or "Tie me kangaroo down, sport".

I have touched on the subject of national anthems in some of my previous blog-pamphlet postings:

A new national anthem for Australia

Australian election policies

There is only one proper purpose of any national anthem.  That is to provide the appropriate lyrics and tune to shed light on the desires of a populace so that politicians of that country may accurately respond to those desires.  A national anthem should be one that may easily be sung by most members of the public, in tune and with genuine cheerfulness.

For world peace, however, there is a need for a global anthem.  I am not sure which lyrics and tune you would choose, but I hope that Mr Mozart and Mr da Ponte may be of assistance to you.  Would Non più andrai be appropriate?
