Good Servants Required. Apply Within.

It is so difficult to find good servants nowadays.  The more senior ones keep trying to oust each other from their positions.  Parlour maids want to be estate managers.  Footmen want to be...

...parlour maids.  What is the world coming to?

My neighbours and I have all had trouble finding good servants.  We replaced a few of the middle ranking ones in March of this year and may be replacing some of seniors and juniors by October.  Unfortunately, we will have to keep the rest of the middle ranks for most of the next four years as we have been unable to find suitable candidates to take their places.

Why is it that servants are no longer happy with a straw mattress in the attic and a piece of bread and dripping at dawn and dusk?  Julia, my parlour maid, cannot even be relied upon to curtsy to the Queen.  A very ambitious footman, Abbott I think his name is, has a habit of running around the estate half naked on a regular basis, and even swims in the ornamental lake.

Oh, dear.  What am I to do?  Mr Brown is one of the gamekeepers for a small island in the neighbourhood.  I think he is hoping to become the estate manager for a very large island one day.  He sounds like a serious sort of chap.  And I do need a little more help in the garden.

Well, I have heard that the really caring and competent servants are often the lowest paid.   Here is something I have discovered about how much the more disagreeable servants now expect to be paid, even if they are completely incompetent.  Perhaps the wages for these groups should be swapped.
